Lavender is one of my favorite calming essential oils to use. I love the soft, sweet scent of it. I also love how versatile it is.
History of Lavender
Lavender comes from the Latin word lavare, meaning "to wash". The Romans and Ancient Greeks used lavender blossoms to scent the water bath.
During Roman times, the flowers were sold for 100 denarii per pound. They were commonly used in Roman baths to scent the water, lavender was thought to restore the skin. When the Roman Empire conquered southern Britain, the Romans introduced lavender.
During the height of the Plague, glove makers at Grasse would scent their leathers with lavender oil to ward off the plague. This story may have some truth as the Plague was transmitted by fleas, which lavender is known to repel.
Uses of Lavender
Lavender is used for its fragrance, ornamentation, repel various pest insects, and for medicinal purposes.
Properties
The essential oil of lavender has an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used as a topical disinfectant for wounds. It is also said to have a sedative, antispasmodic and tranquilizing effect.
Like I said it's a versatile
How is the essential oil processed?
The properties of lavender are extracted from the oil glands in the leaf and blossom. Lavender's volatile oil is best extracted from the flowers picked before they reach maximum bloom and following a long period of hot and dry temperatures.
The essential oil is then extracted by steam distillation.
How I use Lavender in My Home
The main 2 ways I use lavender is:
1. for calming
2. healing
When I use it for calming purposes, I will diffuse it or mix with other oils to make the ultimate knock out blend.
My calming blend consists of Lavender, Bergamot and Cedarwood. I use this blend on my little girls just before bed and within about 30 mins they are calm and falling asleep. Click HERE for the recipe.
When I use it for healing, I will mix it with other essential oils, which are Melalueca, Arborvitae and Frankincense. It is my diaper rash mix or Owie Spray. Click HERE for the recipe.
